A miniature railroad chugs through the pines. From spring through fall, the blacksmith, miller and craftsmen demonstrate their trades. Craft shops occupy restored pioneer cabins and artisans chat with visitors from their front porches. Steeped in history, Tannehill feels timeless. The cotton gin, pioneer farm and working gristmill preserve a long-gone way of life. Hiking trails retrace historic roadways. Artifacts of Alabama’s 19th century iron industry displayed in the Iron and Steel Museum put in perspective the massive stone furnaces, Tannehill’s awe-inspiring centerpiece.

The park was founded in 1961 by William "Buddy" Rogers. He ran the park as a day-hike/picnic area for forty years. In 2003 he donated his beloved park to the State of Alabama Wildlife & Fisheries.
The City of Cullman Parks & Recreation now has the responsibility of operating the property. There is something here for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. The park features several waterfalls that are rain fed and run about eight months out of the year. There are many unusual rock formations, and beautiful scenic views. We have several miles of established hiking trails.
In addition to hiking, visitors can picnic beside the creek under the covered pavillion or at individual tables in the same vicinity. We are building mountain bike trails with many free-ride elements that are currently being detailed and finished, we are forging ahead with expansion on a daily basis. www.hurricanecreek.homestead.com/ Monte Sano State ParkMonte Sano, Spanish for “Mountain of Health,” rises more than 1,600 feet above sea level. The mountain has attracted visitors since the mid 1820’s with the establishment of the town of Viduta, a derivative of the Spanish word “Vida,” meaning life. Viduta was home to a sanatorium and a hotel resort, Hotel Monte Sano, which opened its doors on June 1, 1887 and closed in the early 1900’s due to a declining economy.

This back-to-nature park offers 200-plus tent and RV camp sites, a swimming pool and spiral water slide (in season), lake swimming, picnic area, and shelters. Rustic cabins are available near the lake. Other facilities include carpet golf course, a free public boat launch, and playgrounds. The Cullman County Parks & Recreation Department host a number of special events & festivals at the park throughout the year including a spectacular 4th of July fireworks show and the annual Indian Festival, sponsored by the Echota Cherokee Tribe.

Located in Houston County in the southeast corner of Alabama, it takes its name from the nearby Chattahoochee River. Other facilities include a marina, campstore, fishing pier, hiking trails, playground and picnic areas with tables, grills and shelters. Ten camping cabins are currently under construction at Wind Creek State Park, three of which are now open to the public.
